Providence has been working with Horst Construction since 1992—beginning with Horst’s corporate headquarters, followed by two major performing arts projects, American Music Theatre and Sight & Sound Theatres. In addition to its rugby roots, Scrum also can attribute its beginnings to two Japanese thought leaders. Scrum was modeled after “The New New Product Development Game” by Hirotaka Takeuchi and Ikujiro Nonaka, published in the Harvard Business Review in 1986. Nonaka was hired by the Japanese government after World War II to help analyze why they lost the war. Takeuchi is considered to be one of the top ten business school professors in the world.
According to Dr. Jeff Sutherland, “Together their formal model has led us down the path to an extraordinary implementation of their vision of Scrum project management. Both of these teachers are surprised and impressed with the wide-spread adoption of Scrum in software.”

Making sure that project meetings are efficient—and useful—is no small task, so we asked one of our Project Managers, Jake Moyer, to share his advice on the subject.

As a Lancaster County farm boy, Dale R. Yoder, AIA, President of Cornerstone Design-Architects, had no idea what a lifelong influence his ninth grade drafting teacher would have on his career. Having an aptitude for both architecture and theology, Dale went on to earn dual degrees in order to pursue his interests—an Architecture degree from Temple University, and later a Master of Arts degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Many years and hundreds of projects later, Dale speaks about his background and partnered projects with Horst Construction.

James Hubbard, a Brit by birth, came to the U.S. in the late 1980’s under a basketball scholarship. At the time, he thought he would return to the U.K. after graduation, but his faith took him in another direction. After transferring to Messiah College where he majored in Exercise Physiology, his journey took him to Kutztown University as Assistant Provost, and eventually to New Covenant Christian School. James was also on the Board at Lebanon Free Church, where he initially met the Horst team when they were proposing new construction for the Church.

When it comes to Safety in Construction, expert Joe Heller can teach all of us a few things. Having been a biology teacher early on in his career, Joe knows the difference between science and the application of science in the field. In the case of safety, what’s important is the difference between Safety Science and Safety Law. With almost 40 years of experience running the safety program at Horst, he advises that if anyone is faced with a decision between what is safe and what is strictly legal, they should do it the safe way.
